Photography Gear every blogger needs

Photography Equipment every blogger needs

Hello, lovelies!!
If you are a blogger, you probably already know that photography is pretty much everything. I have been into photography since I was about 9 years old. Even though I am comfortable with my photography, there is an entire world of blogging out there and I have seen some incredible images online. This means that as a new blogger or someone who is interested in taking their blogging to another level, you have to make sure you have all the tools that you need for success.

**RELATED: How to plan a photo shoot for your blog.

I did my first official photo shoot last month. It took a while to plan and I was so nervous to actually do it, but once it was done, I was so happy with the way the photos turned out. That being said,

A good camera

Okay guys, I need to get this out of the way right now. If you don't have tons of money to spend on a brand new DLSR camera, you don't have to be stressed out. If you have a good smart phone, like an iphone with portrait mode or a new galaxy phone, that should hold you until you have a little more money to invest.

I shoot my photos with my iphone 6S. I also have a DSLR camera that is super old. I got it ten years ago and it wasn't even the newest model at that time. It goes pretty much everywhere with me and I have had it through all of the major times in my life. After all this time, it still works perfectly and takes amazing quality images. I have a NIKON D40.

You can probably find an older camera like mine used for a great price. This would be great for someone starting out with photography.

A good lens

Although most DSLR cameras come with pretty awesome kit lenses, you can take your photos to the next level with a better lens, I recommend you picking up a 50mm lens. These lenses create more of a blurry background which is what most bloggers live for. I finally just ordered a 50mm lens for my wedding (which i'm photographing myself) and I am SO excited to try it out! I will definitely share my tips with you once I get it going

Good lighting.
I can not stress this enough, but lighting is literally EVERYTHING. Especially if you are a beauty blogger, or someone who takes lots of selfies and close ups, I promise you that you absolutely need good lighting. There are a couple options for lighting and here are my two favorite options.

A phone ring light

So I discovered this thanks to Kim Kardashian West. She swears by her LumiCase, because it gives her the perfect amount of light for her selfies. I wanted to try something a little less expensive, just to see if I liked it and I am happy with my purchase. I got this adorable ring light that clips to the top of my phone. It is battery operated and it has 3 different light settings. It does get VERY bright and you can not stare at this thing for too long or you will see circles for hours after. Not sure if the LumiCase is easier on the eyes, but no matter your preference, you need a selfie ring light.

A regular ring light

If you are planning on taking indoor shots, maybe of yourself and your outfits, I suggest a larger ring light. Pretty much every official content creator use these because they give off the best light for the price. Without having to use other lighting accessories. I personally do not own one of these because I don't take enough indoor photos, but I am hoping to purchase one soon to take more outfit posts. I would suggest this one, it is a top seller on Amazon

A tripod

This is something that anyone who has a DSLR should have, but there are also mounts that you can get for your smart phone. This is a life saver if you usually take your own photos. It will take a little while to get used to when it comes to posing, and feeling silly taking your own pics, but this is definitely a must have for all social content creators. Make sure you have a mount for your phone and for your camera. I just ordered this one for my wedding.

A wireless remote
Again, this is something suitable for you if you typically take your own blog photos. There is nothing worse than setting the self timer and trying to get situated before the photo is taken. These remotes are small and easy to use. Try to find one that works with your camera and your smart phone. Not sure if that is possible, but that is my goal.

Underwater Accessories

One of the best things I have purchased for my iphone is my Lifeproof case. I picked this up in Clearwater beach, because I was taking my phone in the water and I was terrified that I was ging to drop it. That would make for a miserable rest of the trip. These cases are pretty expensive, I think I paid like $60 for mine, but this is perfect if you like to take a lot of pictures in/by the pool/beach. It also really helps to turn your smartphone into a gopro beacuse you can take it underwater.

All the necessary storage and carrying equipment
If you are investing in all of this stuff, you need to invest in a safe and easy way to store and carry your gear. This includes the neck strap for your camera, lens caps and cases, lens wipes, etc. You want to make sure you take the best care of your photography equipment because you will use it so much!

I think that is everything that I think a blogger absolutely needs to get killer photos for their blog or business. Let me know if I left anything out!

  1. I love this - might have to wave it under the husband’s nose... At the moment I shoot everything for the blog on my iPhone 7+, even though I also have a Nikon. I would challenge anyone to be able to tell the difference between the photos shot on my phone and the ones on my camera though! Charlie xo
